Jakarta Art Movement: The Second God @ Galeri Nasional, Jakarta, February 21 - 28, 2010
A visual critique expressed in three dimensional art works on the contemporary culture of the idolatry and the existence of "the new god" in the form of science & technology, man's identity, and the path to a new spiritual discovery in the urban area.
A. Science and Technology
Hitherto (in the 21st century) there is tension between man and artificial intelligence such as machines and computers. Which is considered to have created "superior human beings" and replacing man's every role and functions, even so far as overtaking the whole human consciousness. Did science and technology have truly "defeat" the essence of human existence? Did the machines have become "the new god"?
B. Man's Identity
The reality inside man is always paradoxical,
which is always conveyed by a feeling of anxiety relating to how to find a totality of meaning of the self and humanity, so intrinsically inseparable inside every man. These human beings inside this contemporary culture, do they have to choose between completing the mission of humanity like that that has existed in the history of human civilization, or to become a "constantly renewed" human beings of being both man and god at the same time?
C. New Spiritualism
These urban men often furiously say that the ultimate secret of the 20th century is: when they were able to conquer nature with their intelligence, and explore it, and man is enthroned by the modernism that has given birth to true happiness! In reality man is hindered by failures after failures and the 21st century man gradually realizes that true happiness exist within the soul, manifested through man's spiritual strength. Is it true that we have found a new god and a new spiritualism?
