After the spiraling debt crisis of Greece in 2010, the citizen of Athens young and old took to the streets and rallied to express their dissent and indignation towards their government, the protests soon ignited into a riotous affair. Clashes between the police and the protesters were inevitable.

One yellowish stray dog with a blue collar known as "rebel dog" or "riot dog" was frequently spotted in the many street riots. The Athens city government marked stray dogs with blue collars around their necks as a sign that they have been neutered by the authorities. One might be forgiven to think that it might be a mockery to the blue collar humans; a neutered class deprived of their rights?Riot dog is said to be fearless; barking and taunting at the police, gnashing its teeth,

braving the tear gas and stunt grenades thrown at it, but so did the protesters, as if man and canine alike were voicing the same sentiment; a discontent towards the authorities. In this case towards the new debt approved by the IMF soon to be loaned to Greece that will add even more debt atop the old one, and the draconian budget cuts approved by the Greek parliament forcing ordinary Greek citizens to work longer hours, imposed on older statutory pension age, and higher taxes. They will have to work more until they are old, for less.

As of this article is written there is still some doubt whether "rebel dog" is one single dog or several similar-looking dogs that frequented the riots. Nevertheless, rebel dog was made famous on the internet after it appeared in numerous photographs posted by the media, it has its own FaceBook page with thousands of fans, and even musical tributes on YouTube. Rebel dog haveĀ
become the mascot of the rebel man of Athens yearning for a revolution, and we wish rebel dog good luck.(Picture source: http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=165765)
