Mushroom Jesus
George Wade Paulin, a.k.a. Mushroom Jesus attempts to translate his belief in an experimental project with flowing elements of hip-hop, funk, and psychedelic. Perhaps the music reflects the artist’s life and spiritual journey and asks the listener to, in his own words “think about religious dogma, question it, and come away with a better sense their own spirituality”, delivered by way of explorative rhythm and psychedelic lyrics that flirts and entertains the ears and the mind. Jesus was a mushroom and we can’t say no to that.
Indiefonica: Why did you choose “Mushroom Jesus” as your moniker? Is there a meaning behind the name?
Mushroom Jesus: Jesus was a magic mushroom. The Amanita Muscaria mushroom. This mushroom is the symbol of the womb. I believe the way a woman gives birth is identical to how the universe was created.
Indiefonica: We've read an article about a religion which says that Jesus was not a man but a hallucinogenic mushroom in TIME magazine (click here to read the article). Do you also believe that as your faith?
Mushroom Jesus: Yes!
Indiefonica: Did you ever attend Sunday school?
Mushroom Jesus: Yes, I was raised Catholic and attended religious schools as a child. I was confirmed and was even an alter boy.
Indiefonica: What/who influenced your music?
Mushroom Jesus: I was born and adopted in Chicago Illinois on March 20th 1986. I grew up in Los Angeles California. My adopted mother died when I was 6 years old. Middle School was very difficult for me; I grew up being told I had ADHD and learning disabilities, and was heavily medicated. Religious schools had no interest to me. By 10th grade I had found an interest for psychedelic drugs. After my “rehabilitation, I soon found my self living in the mountains of Viti Levu, Fiji islands. I lived with a Fijian family and had a Fijian mother and father. At age 18, I decided I wanted to contact my birth mother. This was a big impact in my life and has influenced my music and who I am today.
Indiefonica: We can’t help but notice your music has spiritual themes, is this true? What’s the idea behind it?
Mushroom Jesus: I am interested in the myths and traditions that have influenced popular religion over time, especially their history and origins, and how they influenced the lives of people who practiced these ideas—people who believed the myths and followed the traditions. I would like my music to get people to think about all of this religious dogma, question it, and come away with a better sense their own spirituality.
Indiefonica: In terms of music, what’s your goal for the future?
Mushroom Jesus: I am an Audio Engineer, more of a technician. I like it all; recording, producing, mixing, and film. I will continue to make music as mushroom jesus and also work with the other artists.
Indiefonica: Last question; If you're given an Apocalypse button, would you press it? Can you explain why?
Mushroom Jesus: No, God should only have that ability. I love history, and pressing that button would end history as we know it.
